Maybe you lost your job or, maybe you are just looking for more freedom and dreaming of being able to work from home, wherever and whenever you want. But how do you do that? Because it often seems more difficult than it actually is, I have drawn up a handy step-by-step plan for you. Follow these 10 steps and you will have a successful, profitable online business in no time!
STEP 1: Get your own domain name as soon as possible.
This is the most important step. Your domain name is the website address of your site or blog. By acquiring a domain name without delay, you can secure your company name or personal name or your keywords, before anyone else grabs it. But before making a decision on the name please consider the following:
a) What are you enthusiastic about and what are you good at?
Before deciding on a name for your address on the web, consider what you like and what you’re good at. If you want your business to be successful, it is important that you choose a topic that you are passionate about and are good at. If you want to make money, it is not enough to simply follow your passion. In order for people to pay for your knowledge, you need to be able to show them that you have experience with or know a lot about the subject. Once you know what you’re passionate about and about what subject you have enough knowledge, it will be easier to decide on a good and relevant domain name and company name. Let’s say you are passionate and know a lot about koala bears then your domain choice could be koalabear dot com and your company name could be Koala.
b) Determine your target group.
If you try to address everyone, you will end up addressing no one. And if people don’t feel addressed, they won’t buy your products either because they don’t feel it is meant for them. Therefore, make sure you choose a specific target group. The better you know who is your ideal customer, the easier it will be to attract the right people, create valuable content for them, and bond with them. Knowing your target group will also make it easier to determine the name of your domain. Example you decide to sell toys for boys (so boys are your target group) your domain could be toysforboys dot com and your company name Boys Toys.
c) Keep your domain name short if possible so that it’s easier to remember for visitors.
d) Use either your company name, your own name or relevant keywords in your web address. Avoid more than 2 keywords.
Personally I always use Linux Hosts Inc. for my domain names. The company is very reliable, offers lower pricing than others (from $2.50) and gives every customer full control over his or her domain unlike some other domain registrars. You can find them HERE.
Other reliable domain registrars are, among others, Domain.com and Name Cheap.
STEP 2: Make your domain name visible online by using the services of a web host. This is the second most important step.
To start an online business or to get a successful work at home job, you must of course have a website and, in order to make your domain always visible online, you’ll need excellent web hosting, otherwise nobody can find you.
Since 2005 all my websites are hosted by Linux Hosts Inc, a more than excellent web hosting company offering not only low pricing (from $5 a month) but numerous other advantages, actually too much to mention here. I have done my best to find disadvantages but really couldn’t find any.
They have the lowest cancellation rate (only 2%) in the industry. Some other hosts have customer cancellation rates of up to 50%! Can you imagine that?
With Linux Hosts Inc. new customers can make use of a 30 day free trial without having to submit financial information. You can find them HERE.
Other good web hosting providers I can recommend are, for example, A2 Hosting, Green Geeks, Inmotion and Site Ground.
Try to avoid web hosts such as Go Daddy and Blue Host. They overload their web servers with too many websites. This causes all kinds of problems. The most common issues are slow loading or being offline.
STEP 3: Build a website OR let me do that for you for free!
Since web design is my hobby, I offer to install WordPress.org (NOT WordPress.com) for free for you on the condition that you are already on the paid plan. The only thing you need to do is to send your Linux Hosts Inc. username and your acquired domain name to my email address email@example.com. If you have extra wishes, you can also include them. Basic plugins will be installed automatically. I will send you an email if I need more information from you and will immediately inform you the moment your new website is online.
In any case you can rest assured that WordPress will be installed for you at no cost within 24 hours and voila, the next day, your website is already online by typing your domain name in the address bar of your browser!
STEP 4: Create valuable content.
Then, to draw people to your website and make them want to keep coming back for more, you need to fill it with great content. Write articles that are relevant and valuable to your target audience and that help them achieve their goals and solve their problems. If you don’t know how to write an article, you can of course also get started with video or audio, such as a podcast.
STEP 5: Get started with Social Media Marketing.
By being present on social media while working from the comfort of your home, you make yourself visible to your target group, you can position yourself as an expert and you can distinguish yourself from the competition. In addition, you can also use social media marketing to get in touch with your target group, to inspire your target group and to promote your content and products. I recommend focusing on Instagram to connect with your target audience and Pinterest to drive traffic to your website.
STEP 6: Get started with SEO (search engine optimization).
Simply put, SEO is applying certain tactics to get Google to see your article as better than the rest, getting you higher in the search results and pulling a steady stream of free traffic to your website. Among other things, you can improve your SEO by using relevant keywords in your articles, ensuring that other relevant websites link to your website and referring to other relevant pages or articles on your website in your articles.
STEP 7: Start with email marketing.
To make your home business on the internet a success, building an email list must be your priority. Email marketing is the most effective way to sell your products, and because it’s personal, it’s also one of the best ways to build relationships with your target audience and get them to see you as an expert. You can grow your email list by attracting people with valuable content to your website and then offering them freebies in exchange for their email address. You could, for example offer a free ebook or a free course.
STEP 8: Decide how you want to earn money.
Now that you have valuable articles on your website, are attracting more and more people to your site and are building an email list, it’s time for the last 2 steps: making money.
The four most common options for making money are posting ads, sponsored articles, affiliate marketing, or selling your own digital products. I recommend joining affiliate programs or networks because it’s the easiest way to get started.
STEP 9: Start with affiliate marketing.
Let me first explain what affiliate marketing is. Affiliate marketing is the process of promoting other people’s (or company’s) products or services which will earn you a commission for each sale. You can join an affiliate program in two different ways. The first option is to find a website selling products or services that you’d like to promote. You’ll often find a link to their affiliate program. Well known examples are Amazon Associates, Walmart and eBay.
The second option is to join affiliate marketing networks such as, for example, Share A Sale, CJ Affiliate, Rakuten, Click Bank, and FlexOffers. Once accepted you will be able to choose from many affiliate programs.
Alternative: Make your first digital product.
Instead of starting as an affiliate working for another person or company, you can also create a product or service yourself. The best-known options for digital products are e-books and courses, so I recommend choosing one of these two options for your first product. Most people learn quite quick how to write an ebook
E-books are relatively easy, quick and often free to make. If you want to create online courses it will consume much more time and you also have to pay for a platform. For courses you can then ask a higher price, so that courses will generally yield you more than e-books.
To ensure that you make a product that your target group actually wants, it is important that you solve a common problem for your target group with your product. So don’t think of a topic exclusively based on your own interests, but choose a topic that you are sure your target audience will want to learn more about.
After you’ve figured out what to make and what topic to cover, it’s important to validate your idea. This means that you first ask your target group whether they are waiting for the product at all. This prevents you from working for weeks or months on a product that no one ultimately wants to buy. You can validate your idea, among other things, by having your target group fill in a survey or by asking directly in an email or via social media.
When people are enthusiastic about your idea, you can start making your product.
STEP 10: Promote your product or service.
Once you have chosen a great affiliate program or you created a unique digital product, it’s time to promote your products and/or services. Like I said, email marketing is by far the best way to promote your products because the people on your list are generally people who trust you, see you as an expert, and are eager to learn more from you.
You can simply email the people on your list that you’ve made a product, but this generally doesn’t get you that much sales. It is better to “warm up” people with free webinars, e-mail courses or challenges and refer to your product at the end.
