Step-by-step plan for writing an article.
Writing an article is quite a challenge. How to start and how to attract as much audience as possible? In this article you will find a handy step-by-step plan and a lot of information to make writing an article easier.
Writing an article, it all seems so easy. But once you start using it in practice, it turns out to be a lot more difficult than expected. This step-by-step plan makes it easier and faster. All steps are detailed below.
Think about what kind of topic it should be.
Think about what you want to say on this topic.
Make chapters in advance.
Look up information on the subject.
Write the information in your own words in the appropriate chapters.
Make a catchy introduction.
Check for spelling and grammar errors and look again at the layout.
Choose a subject.
Without a subject it is difficult to write an article. If you do not have a fixed subject, it is best to choose a subject that you already know something about and that you want to know more about.
Think about what kind of article it should be.
For this it is important that you keep two things in mind: the purpose of the article and the target audience.
Purpose of the article:
In general, you can choose one of the following goals: inform, have fun or convince. It makes sense that you write a completely different article to inform someone than you would if you just want to amuse someone.
When you write an article you must ensure that the article matches the target group. You do this not only by choosing a topic that is interesting for the target group, but also by ensuring that the article is easily readable for your target group. An article intended for children in the elementary school is, of course, written very differently from an article intended for university professors. With the last target group, you can assume that your target group already has certain prior knowledge and you therefore no longer have to explain certain things.
Think about what you want to tell about a topic.
This step mainly applies to the informative articles, the convincing and amusement articles are less important for this step. Once you have chosen a subject, you will soon discover that there is a lot to say about it. Telling everything in one article is actually not possible, so you will have to find out for yourself which information you would like to include in your article and what to exclude.
Make chapters in advance.
To keep things clear for yourself, it is useful if you make some chapters in advance. You can then immediately organize information that you find, under the right subject.
For an informative text, frequently used chapters are often: what is a …, history of the …, what is the purpose of …, why would you …, how to make a … where to find … and much more.
For a compelling text, a common format is: your opinion, followed by your arguments, then arguments against, then refutation of these arguments, followed by a conclusion why your opinion is better than that of your opponents.
With a text that is intended to amuse people, many formats are possible. Usually there is a catchy introduction, followed by a story with a plot or unexpected twist in the story at the end.
Find information about your topic.
This step is one of the most important ones for an informative text, because your article stands or falls with the information it contains. However, with both convincing and amusing texts, it is also important that you do some research on the topic that your writing is about. With convincing texts it is easier to disprove counter-arguments if you have more knowledge on the subject and with amusing texts it is interesting, for example, to know something about the time or the situation in which the story takes place.
When searching for information it is possible to retrieve the information from books or to search for information on the internet. Information from books is usually fairly reliable, but information on the internet not always. Therefore, try to stick to reliable sources.
Write the information in your own words in the right chapters.
This step is actually not important for the amusing texts, but all the more important for the informative and convincing texts. Only when you have compiled the information in your own words can you really call an article your own article. Do not forget to add a source if you have used sources.
Write a catchy introduction.
The introduction is the first thing people read about your article. Make sure it gets people’s attention, but don’t promise anything in the introduction that you can’t live up to.
Check the article one more time.
When you are finished writing an article, check it for spelling and grammar mistakes before publishing it anywhere. If necessary, let other people read it too. And remember, a beautiful layout attracts more people than a cluttered layout.
What if you don’t have time to write articles?
If you’re too busy with other things than writing articles you have several options:
